Oli appeals Gen Z generation to not compromise on democratic system

KATHMANDU: Caretaker Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has appealed to the Gen Z generation to safeguard Nepal’s democratic system.

In his written address from the Shivapuri barracks of Nepal Army, Oli said that holding office has never been a priority for him, stressing instead that his life’s purpose is to safeguard Nepal’s political system. “What matters most is preserving this system — the very system that has given you the right to speak, to walk freely and to question,” Oli said. “I believe there will be no compromise on protecting this system.”

Oli recalled how the struggle for political change had denied him the chance to have his own children. “The brutal torture I faced in those years meant I was left without children of my own, but my desire to be a father never died. When I heard that young lives were cut short by police bullets, I felt something inside me end too,” he said.

The CPN-UML Chairperson added that the violent turn of protests on the second day of the Gen Z protest, including arson at government offices and the release of prisoners, was not the work of young protesters but the result of a deeper conspiracy. “I cannot believe such destruction came from your tender hands. Your emotions have been exploited for political games,” he said.

He also defended his reputation for stubbornness, pointing to past stands on social media regulation, territorial claims over Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura, and the assertion that Lord Ram was born in Nepal. “Had I compromised on these issues, I could have secured many opportunities. But I chose principle over convenience,” Oli said.

“Today, you can raise your voice, you can protest, and you can question because of this system. Now, there are attempts to destroy it. You must be sensitive to this reality and protect it,” he added.
