KATHMANDU: A faction of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) has challenged the formation of the government in Sudurpashchim Province at the Supreme Court.
NUP province assembly member Laxman Kishore Chaudhary registered the writ petition on Sunday. In the petition, he has argued that the appointment of Dirgha Sodari as the Chief Minister without the authentic letter of the NUP parliamentary party is unconstitutional.
Sodari of CPN (Unified Socialist) was appointed Chief Minister of Sudurpashchim Province on Thursday with the support of CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), NUP, CPN (Unified Socialist), and independent member Tara Joshi.
Earlier, two province members of NUP – Laxman Kishore and Kailash Chaudhary – had submitted separate claims to form the government to Province Chief Nazir Miyan. Miyan had rejected both claims.
Province assembly members and leaders of NUP are divided into two factions led by NUP President Ranjita Shrestha and NUP Patron Resham Lal Chaudhary. While the faction led by Ranjita is in favor of forming a government with the new ruling coalition of the center, Resham is for joining hands with the Nepali Congress to form a government in the province.
