KATHMANDU: Leaders of the Nepal Samajbadi Party (NSP), except those close to party chairperson Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, have reached an agreement to unify with the CPN (Maoist Center).

The two parties signed an understanding for party unification in Kathmandu on Saturday. Maoist Center General Secretary Dev Prasad Gurung and NSP General Secretary Roshan Prasad Yadav signed the understanding, according to a joint press note issued by the two parties.

The understanding states that the name of the unified party will be decided by the upcoming general convention.

Additionally, the two parties have formed a task force to streamline party ideologies and make organizational preparations for the unification. Maoist Center General Secretary Gurung and Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma, along with NSP’s co-chairperson Ganga Narayan Shrestha and General Secretary Yadav, are in the task force.

NSP Chairperson Dr. Bhattarai has been stating that immediate unification with the Maoist Center is not feasible. Leaders close to Chairperson Mahendra Raya Yadav had boycotted a meeting called by another Chairperson, Dr. Bhattarai, a few days ago.

NSP leaders say that they decided to unify the party without Dr. Bhattarai as Maoist Center Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal is unwilling to collaborate with his former party colleague.

NSP Chairperson Yadav contested the 2022 election under the symbol of the Maoist Center. He has been saying that he was in an uncomfortable situation being a lawmaker of the Maoist Center and the chairperson of NSP.
