NSP (Naya Shakti) convention kicks off in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: The first national convention of the Nepal Socialist Party (NSP) – Naya Shakti began in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Dr Baburam Bhattarai, the coordinator of NSP Naya Shakti inaugurated the convention.

Leaders of different political parties like DP Aryal, acting chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP); Resham Chaudhary, chairperson of the Nagarik Unmukti Party; Dr. CK Raut, chairperson of the Janamat Party and Samiksha Basnet, chairperson of the Bibeksheel Sajha Party; and leaders from civil society, among others, attended the inaugural session.

Speaking on the occasion, Aryal, Chaudhary, Raut and Basnet emphasized the need and relevance of alternative forces in the country. They added that alternative forces should work with unity.

Addressing the convention, Dr Bhattarai highlighted the need for alternative political forces in Nepal, stating that development cannot be achieved through the old political forces. “The national convention will chart a path to bring new political forces together into the mainstream,” said Bhattarai. “In this new era, it is essential to hold roundtable conferences and discussions among new alternative political forces.”

The former Prime Minister also emphasized the need to unite alternative forces and launch a transformative political journey with policies, ideas, and organizational campaigns. “The political document to be presented at the national convention affirms the relevance of new ideas for the new era and alternative politics,” Bhattarai said, claiming that the document outlines a roadmap for the future journey, incorporating digital and AI technologies.

The convention, which will conclude on Tuesday, will elect new leadership of the party for a four-year term.

NSP (Naya Shakti) Spokesperson Krishna Sharma said 1,600 representatives present at the convention will elect the party’s president, vice-president, general secretary, and central committee members through a direct voting system.
