KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has formed a three-member task force under Dr Rewat Bahadur Karki to make recommendations for the overall improvement and strengthening of the banking sector.

Guru Prasad Paudel, chief of the NRB’s Bank and Financial Institutions Regulation Department, and former banker Bhuwan Dahal are the other members of the task force, according to a statement issued by the central bank.

The task force has been given a one-month timeframe with six specific responsibilities.

First, recommending a banking policy framework that is liberal yet prudent, with an emphasis on risk-based supervision and the development of customer-friendly banking services.

Second, suggesting strategies for the banking sector to make the economy more dynamic.

Third, suggesting measures to ensure effective credit flow in rural areas.

Fourth, identifying and resolving merger and post-merger issues in the banking sector.

Fifth, making necessary suggestions on the role of banks and financial institutions to remove Nepal from the Financial Action Task Force’s ‘grey list’.

Sixth, making suggestions on the coordinating role that the central bank should play in capital market development.
