No system or ideology is greater than people’s freedom: Shah

KATHMANDU: Former King Gyanendra Shah has said that no system or ideology above people’s freedom.

“No system or ideology is greater than people’s freedom. True democracy exists where there is a tradition and culture of listening to both praise and grievances, good or bad,” Shah said in a video message issued on the eve of the New Year 2082 BS on Sunday

He expressed optimism about the growing awareness among Nepali people regarding the nation’s future. “The awakening to free the country from current complexities and build a peaceful, stable and prosperous nation has instilled confidence that the aspirations of Nepalis will be fulfilled in the new year,” he added.

Shah also said that the teachings of Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal, should serve as the guiding principle for the state. “What harm is there in adopting the divine counsel of the great king as the core mantra of governance? Balanced diplomacy and a vision of a self-reliant Nepal encapsulate Prithvi’s essence. This should be the mainstream of politics,” he remarked.

The former monarch also expressed sorrow over the human and material losses during the March 28 incident at Tinkune, Kathmandu. “The beauty of democracy lies in allowing diverse groups, classes, and communities to express their beliefs and opinions. However, restraint must be exercised in such expressions,” Shah said. “We are deeply saddened by the violence, arson, and destruction during recent protests, which caused significant human and material damage.”
