Former President Bidya Bhandari
KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has dismissed claims that she is engaged in factional politics.
Talking to journalists in Biratnagar on Tuesday, Bhandari claimed that she has no personal political ambitions and remains politically independent.
“CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli can never say that I am engaged in factional politics. I started my political career with UML and became President of the county from the same party,” Bhandari said. “If I ever enter politics again, it will be from the UML.”
Bhandari also added that she is free to attend events and express her opinions. “I don’t need permission from any committee or leader. I have been involved in the party even before becoming an active member. I know everyone,” she said. “It is natural for me to be invited to party events.”
She added that it is not necessary to seek permission from the UML committee or its leaders to understand people’s aspirations.
Commenting on talks of leftist unity, Bhandari expressed skepticism, pointing to a growing trust deficit among political parties. “In this situation of political mistrust, serious discussions are essential for the broader good of the country,” she added.
Bhandari’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about her political role after completing her term as Nepal’s second President.
