No immediate indication of large-scale job loss due to West Asia conflict: Govt

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that there is no immediate indication that the conflict in West Asia will lead to large-scale job losses among Nepali migrant workers.

Speaking at a press meet in Kathmandu on Friday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Thapa Chhetri said around 86,500 Nepalis had registered for evacuation since the outbreak of the conflict in West Asia. “However, the number of those who consider themselves to be in unsafe conditions has been gradually declining,” he added.

Chhetri also said the government was facing difficulties in repatriating the bodies of 38 Nepali nationals, who died due to various reasons, because of flight disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict. “Nine bodies were repatriated on Wednesday via a Kuwait Airways flight. Efforts are underway to bring back the remaining bodies,” he added.

He also said 11 Nepalis currently in Iran are safe and in contact with the Nepali mission in Doha.

“I request Nepalis facing serious difficulties and those who wish to return home to contact the concerned embassies. The government will provide necessary support,” he added.
