KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has clarified that it was not curtailing supplies within the country to export power to India.
As instances of load shedding in the Kathmandu Valley rise, people have started commenting that NEA was cutting supplies to export electricity to India.
Organizing a press conference in Kathmandu on Sunday, NEA Managing Director Kul Man Ghising said the recent load shedding was due to technical problems within the system. “There are certain issues affecting power supply in the central and western regions of the country, which have now been resolved,” Ghising said. “The claims of NEA cutting supplies in the domestic market to export electricity are unfounded.”
Ghising also said NEA was exporting only the surplus energy. “Energy consumption and export are interdependent. Exporting surplus electricity can bring economic benefits,” he said, “While occasional system disturbances have occurred, we have identified and rectified the issues.”
He acknowledged that there are some challenges in power supply during evening peak hours in industries along the Birgunj Industrial Corridor and the Kohalpur area of Banke. These challenges stem from the insufficient capacity of the transmission and distribution system, he added.
