Niraula, Pandey recommended for Supreme Court Justice positions

KATHMANDU: Nripadhwaj Niraula and Nityananda Pandey have been recommended for Supreme Court Justice positions.

The Judicial Council meeting held on Friday recommended the two high court chief judges for appointment as Supreme Court Justice. Niraula is currently the Chief Judge of the Patan High Court in Patan, while Pandey holds the same position at the Tulsipur High Court.

The two will be appointed as the Supreme Court Justice by the President after their recommendation is endorsed by the Parliamentary Hearing Committee.

Chief Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, who is set to retire on October 5 due to age limits, has been trying to fill vacant positions in both the Supreme Court and high courts before his departure. The positions of six justices in the Supreme Court and 16 judges in seven high courts are vacant.

Shrestha has begun his customary one-month home leave ahead of his retirement. The Constitutional Council has already recommended senior-most justice Prakashman Singh Raut for appointment as the next Chief Justice.

Constitutional provisions allow the appointment of 21 justices, including the Chief Justice, in the Supreme Court. This means one-third of the positions are lying vacant.
