NHRC warns Simara incident could harm election environment

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has warned that incidents like the one in Simara of Bara, at a time when national elections have already been announced for March 5, could harm the prospects of a peaceful and conducive electoral environment.

Issuing a statement on Thursday, the national human rights watchdog said the incident also undermined freedoms guaranteed under Article 17 of the constitution and could strain relations among stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

NHRC has warned that such incidents, especially at a time when national elections have already been announced for March 5 (Fagun 21), could harm the prospects of a peaceful and conducive electoral environment. It said the clash also undermined freedoms guaranteed under Article 17 of the constitution and could strain relations among stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

The rights body has directed the government to strengthen law and order, prevent similar incidents in the coming days, ensure an environment that respects freedom of expression for all sides, investigate the incident, and arrange effective treatment for the injured. It has also urged all parties to act with restraint and support efforts to restore normalcy.
