KATHMANDU: The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index extended its winning streak to a fourth consecutive session on Monday, posting a modest gain of 5.01 points to close at 2,936.56.

Although the benchmark index slipped in early trading to an intraday low of 2,907.56 points, it pared some losses but stayed in negative territory for most of the session. A late surge in the closing hour ensured that the index closed in the green.  The index also came close to slipping below the psychological support level of 2,900 points. However, increased buying activity toward the close meant the index firmly remained above the support level.

Despite the uptick, market breadth remained negative as unit prices of 154 scrips declined, while 102 advanced and eight remained unchanged. Four scrips hit the positive circuit of 10%, while two others closed above 9%.

Kumari Bank Ltd topped the turnover chart with shares worth Rs 672.37 million traded. Shivam Cement Ltd and National Hydropower Company Ltd followed with turnovers of Rs 606.48 million and Rs 574.82 million, respectively.

Daily turnover fell significantly as only Rs 15.78 billion worth of shares were traded on the bourse through 156,381 transactions on Monday. In comparison, Nepse had logged a total turnover of Rs 23.59 million on Sunday.

Among sectoral indices, six posted losses, while seven ended the session in the green. The biggest loss came from the Hotels & Tourism sub-index, which was down 0.86%, while Manufacturing & Processing posted the biggest gain of 1.53%.
