Nepse down 50.73 points; turnover rises above Rs 10 billion

KATHMANDU: Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index posted a loss of 50.73 points and closed trading at 2,637.79 points on Sunday.

Although the market posted gains initially, breaching the 2,700-point level to reach an intraday high of 2,734.58, it erased all the gains and eventually ended the session 1.88% lower.

Unit prices of 217 scrips declined on the day, while 25 advanced, and two remained unchanged. Despite the loss, three scrips, all hydropower companies, hit the positive circuit of 10% during the session.

CEDB Hydropower Ltd continued to top the turnover list with Rs 643.86 million worth of shares traded. Next were NRN Infrastructure and Development and Himalayan Reinsurance Ltd with turnovers of Rs 352.88 million and Rs 283.03 million, respectively.

Among trading groups, all the sub-indices posted losses on the day. The biggest loss came from the Hotels & Tourism sub-index, which was down by 3.68%. Next were the Finance and Investment sub-indices, which were down by 3.53% and 2.8%, respectively. Market heavyweight Banking sub-index ended 0.93% lower on Sunday.

Despite the loss, daily turnover improved to Rs 10.33 billion. This is the first time since September 4 that the daily turnover crossed the 10-billion-rupee mark. A total of 24.84 million units of securities changed hands through 119,339 transactions on Sunday.
