Nepse down 49.39 points; investors lose Rs 80 billion in a single day

KATHMANDU: After reaching a four-year high of 3,002.07 points on Tuesday, the Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index tanked 47.93 points, closing trading at 2,954.14 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark index started its downward journey right after trading began on Wednesday morning. It continued the decline throughout the session to ultimately close the session 1.59% lower.

Unit prices of 226 scrips declined during the session, while 23 advanced.

Himalayan Reinsurance Ltd led the turnover chart with Rs 1.32 billion worth of shares traded. Himalayan Distillery Ltd and Shivam Cement Ltd followed with turnovers of Rs 732.98 million and Rs 573.37 million worth of shares traded.

Total turnover also fell to Rs 16.44 billion as 36.41 million units were traded through 141,520 transactions.

Market capitalization – the total worth of listed shares on the secondary market – fell by nearly Rs 79.99 billion to Rs 4,929.47 billion on Tuesday. Market capitalization had reached a record 5,009.46 billion on Tuesday.

Except for the Others sub-index, which posted a nominal gain of 0.85%, all sectoral indices ended the session in the red. The biggest loss came from the Microfinance sub-index which was down by 3.28%. Next were the Development Bank and Finance sub-indices, which were down by 3.27% and 2.7%, respectively.
