KATHMANDU: A Malaysian court has sentenced a Nepali worker to two years in prison and three strokes of cane for assaulting a colleague.
Pawan Dhimal from Sunsari, who is working as a cleaner in Malaysia, had physically attacked a fellow Nepali worker for not giving him a cigarette. Bolanath Guragain, the Consular Officer at the Embassy of Nepal in Malaysia, confirmed the sentence handed to Dhimal.
The identity of the assaulted Nepali worker has been kept confidential by the court.
According to Malaysian law, victims have the right to keep their identity private.
After being denied a cigarette, Dhimal repeatedly struck his colleague on the head with a frying pan in the kitchen, as revealed in his statement to the Malaysian police. The frying pan used in the assault was recovered by the police.
During the investigation, Dhimal admitted to attacking the victim. He stated that he acted impulsively after being refused a cigarette.
The victim suffered severe bleeding and had to undergo surgery, followed by 14 days of intensive care.
The employer company has taken the victim under its supervision, Guragain.
