KATHMANDU: The government has formally handed over $350,000 to the Government of Myanmar for the reconstruction of two religious heritage sites damaged by the powerful earthquake that struck on March 28 last year.
According to the Embassy of Nepal in Yangon, Nepali Ambassador to Myanmar Harish Chandra Ghimire handed over a check for $300,000 to U Thein Oo, Secretary General of the Mahamuni Pagoda, during a recent ceremony at the Mahamuni Pagoda complex in the southwestern area of Mandalay.
Similarly, he handed over a cheque for $50,000 to Pawan Bajoria, chairperson of the Gangaghat Hindu Temple, for the reconstruction of the temple.
The Gangaghat Temple is an important religious site for the Nepali community residing in Myanmar.
“The assistance reflects Nepal’s commitment to preserving shared religious heritage and supporting the restoration of culturally significant sites affected by natural disasters,” the embassy said in a statement.
A cabinet meeting held on January 12 had decided to extend the support.
