Nepal eliminated in group stage after three straight defeats

KATHMANDU: Nepal suffered their third successive defeat in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, going down to the West Indies by nine wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on Sunday.

The defeat means Nepal failed to move past the group stage in their three T20 World Cup appearance. Also, they have failed to win any matches in successive T20 World Cups.

Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Nepal made 133 runs for the loss of eight wickets. In reply, the West Indies made 134 with nine wickets and 28 balls remaining.

Nepal lost opener Kushal Bhurtel (1) in the fifth ball of the first over and could not recover. Other opener Aasif Sheikh fell for 1,1 and he was shortly followed by Captain Rohit Paudel (5). Vice Captain Dipendra Sigh Airee scored a valiant 58 off 47 balls. However, he did not get support from the other end. Aaarif Sheikh fell for two, Lokesh Bam made 13, and Gulshan Jha was out for 11. Sompal Kami, playing his first match in the 2026 World Cup, made 26 off 15 balls.

Jason Holden claimed four wickets for the West Indies, while Akeal Hosein, Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph, and Roston Chase picked up one each.

In reply, the West Indies added 43 runs for the first wicket. After Brandon King (22) fell in the sixth over, Captain Shai Hope and Shmro Hetmeyer took the West Indies home. Hope scored 61 off 44 balls, while Hetmyer struck a 32-ball 46.

Nandan Yadav took the only wicket for Nepal. Sandeep Lamichhane bowled an expensive spell, giving away 38 runs in his three overs.

The defeat ended Nepal’s chance of qualifying for the Super 8 stage.

Nepal earlier lost to England by four runs before suffering a humiliating 10-wicket defeat to Italy.

Nepal meet Scotland in their last group-stage match on Tuesday.
