Nepal concedes nine-run defeat against West Indies in 1st warm up match

KATHMANDU: Nepal conceded a nine-run defeat against West Indies in its first warm-up match of the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia on Monday.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, West Indies scored 109 runs for the loss of four wickets. In reply, Nepal was bowled out for 100 runs in 19.1 overs.

Asabi Callender and Amrita Ramtahal added 31 runs for the first wicket for West Indies. Asabi scored 23 off 36, while Amrita contributed 10 runs. Captain Samara Ramnath scored 25, Jahzara Claxton added 22 runs, and Abigail Bryce scored 19 runs to take West Indies’ score past 100.

Rachana Chaudhary and Seemana KC claimed a wicket each for Nepal, while two West Indies batters were run out.

Nepal stumbled in its chase of 110 runs against the Test nation, losing opener Sana Parveen for a duck. Another opener, Sabitri Dhami, was dismissed after scoring five runs. Captain Puja Mahato and Sony Pakhrin gave Nepal some hope, scoring 18 and 15, respectively. Seemana KC and Kiran Kunwar added 23 and 18 runs, respectively, for Nepal. Other Nepali batters failed to reach double digits.

Trisha Hardat, Aaliyah Weekes, and Amiah Gilbert claimed two wickets each for West Indies, while Kenika Cassar took one wicket.

Nepal will play its next warm-up match against the US on Thursday.

The competitive matches will begin on January 18. Nepal is in Group ‘D’ along with Australia, Bangladesh, and Scotland.

The top three teams after the group stage will qualify for the Super 6 round, while the fourth-placed team will play in the play-offs.
