KATHMANDU: A stoppage-time goal from center-back Ananta Tamang helped Nepal avoid defeat against Bangladesh in an international friendly in Dhaka on Thursday.
Nepal had taken the lead in the 29th minute, but Bangladesh struck twice within four minutes early in the second half to go 2–1 up. However, Nepal scored in injury time to secure a 2–2 draw.
Vice-captain Rohit Chand opened the scoring for Nepal with a powerful low shot from outside the box. This was only his second international goal for Nepal.
Bangladesh turned the match around early in the second half with two quick goals from Hamza Choudhury, who plays for English club Leicester City. He equalized in the 46th minute with a spectacular overhead bicycle kick and then converted a penalty four minutes later.
The hosts were awarded the penalty after the referee ruled that Nepali center-back Suman Shrestha had fouled striker Rakib Hossain inside the area.
Nepal had a good chance to level the score in the 62nd minute, but Dinesh Henjan’s effort struck the crossbar, and Laken Limbu failed to finish the rebound.
Just as it appeared Bangladesh would win 2–1, Tamang scored deep into injury time with a flicked header from a corner delivered by substitute Henjan to make it 2–2.
Nepal will now face Malaysia in their fifth match of the third round of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. Nepal remain winless after four matches in the campaign.
