KATHMANDU: Nepal ranked as the 11th largest contributor of international students to the United States in the 2022/23 academic year.

According to the Open Doors 2023 report prepared by the Institute of International Education and the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs under the US Department of State, a total of 15,090 Nepali students are currently pursuing their studies at various universities in the US. This marks a growth of 27.9% compared to the previous academic year of 2021/22, during which 11,799 Nepali students embarked on their educational journeys in the US.

In the 2022/23 academic year, the United States witnessed a 14% growth in the enrollment of new international students, reaching a total of 298,523, up from 261,961 in 2021/22. Consequently, the overall count of international students in the US reached 1.05 million. Nepal’s contribution to this total now stands at 1.4%.

As per the report, New York University, Northeastern University-Boston, and Columbia University are the top three choices for international students in the US during the 2022/23 academic year.
