KATHMANDU: The Internet Service Providers Association of Nepal (ISP) has said that the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) should take full responsibility if the Internet service is disrupted.
Speaking at a press meet organized by the Internet Service Providers Association of Nepal (ISPAN) on Monday, ISPAN CEO Subash Khadka accused the NEA of cutting Internet wires of various service providers in various parts of the country. Khadka stated that it has become increasingly difficult to provide uninterrupted service due to the NEA’s high-handed behavior.
Also speaking on the occasion, ISPAN Chairman Sudhir Parajuli added that it was wrong for the NEA to cut Internet wires, especially considering that ISPs regularly pay rent to the NEA. Parajuli also emphasized that Internet access is a basic right and essential service for people.
According to ISPAN, the NEA has been charging exorbitant rent for the use of poles and optical ground wire, with increases as high as 700%.
The NEA has reportedly cut internet wires in various locations including Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Inaruwa, Kakarbhitta, Gauriganj, Pokhara, Dharan, Khotang, Surkhet, Kailali, Butwal, Tikapur, Attariya, Bhairahawa, Doti, Dhankuta, and Duhabi.
