
KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has reported a profit of Rs 11.36 billion over the first half of the current fiscal year 2024/25.
Issuing a statement, the NEA has said that it earned Rs 11.36 billion in profit before tax deductions till mid-January. During the period, the NEA generated a total revenue of Rs 70.44 billion from electricity sales, interest income and other sources. Meanwhile, its expenditure, mainly on electricity imports from India and administrative operations, stood at Rs 59.08 billion
NEA has been reinvesting its profits into expanding and strengthening infrastructure for electricity generation, transmission and distribution, as well as electrification projects.
According to the utility, it earned Rs 53.18 billion through electricity sales during the review period. It paid Rs 34.84 billion to different hydropower projects which supply electricity to its grid. Likewise, it imported electricity worth Rs 1.65 billion from India.
NEA has been exporting electricity to India during the wet season, while it imports from the southern neighbor during the dry season when a reduction in water levels in major rivers lowers energy generation.
NEA, which posted a loss of Rs 8.89 billion in 2015/16, has consistently made profit since then. It logged a profit of Rs 14.46 billion in the previous fiscal year 2023/24.
