NEA has profited Rs 82 billion since I assumed office eight years ago: Ghising

KATHMANDU: Kul Man Ghising, the executive director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), has claimed that the utility earned a profit of Rs 82 billion since he assumed office eight years ago.

Organizing a press meet in Kathmandu on Friday, Ghising said NEA, which had accumulated a loss of Rs 34.61 billion when he assumed office, now has an accumulated profit of Rs 47.41 billion.

Ghising organized the press meet to inform about the achievements that the utility made during his tenure amid a lack of support from the government to recover outstanding tariff fees from dedicated and trunk line users. NEA had earlier cut power suppliers to six industries that had refused to clear dedicated and trunk line tariffs. However, Ghising was forced to resume supplies to these industries under the pressure of the new coalition government of the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.

He was appointed to the position eight years ago by the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government.

NEA which registered a net loss of Rs 8.89 billion in 2015/16 earned a net profit in 2016/17 under Ghising’s leadership. It recorded a record net profit of Rs 13.31 billion in 2023/24.

Ghising also said that electricity consumption has tripled from 3.72 billion units eight years ago to 10.23 billion units now. Likewise, per capita energy consumption increased from 131 units to 400 units during the period. Electrification too increased from 89.7% three years ago to 99% now, Ghising claimed.
