KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has started cutting power supplies to big factories citing a problem in supplies from the Indian state of Bihar.

“We are cutting supplies for 8-9 hours a day as power supply from Raxaul-Ramnagar corridor has been affected,” according to NEA.

This has created a deficit of 80-100 MW in NEA’s system. According to NEA officials, it would take three-four days for the supplies to resume from India.

The current demand for energy stands at 31,177 MW per hour. NEA has been importing 9,274 MW per hour from India.

NEA stopped power export to India in the third week of December as water levels in major rivers dropped.  As hydropower generation has been affected due to the reduction in water levels in major rivers, the power utility decided to stop power exports to India.

The utility started selling energy in the day-ahead market of the Indian Energy Exchange on June 2. The utility has sold 1.35 billion units of electricity worth around Rs 11.16 billion in the past six months.
