KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) Spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat has drawn the party leadership’s attention to the party’s declining support base.

Speaking at the Central Working Committee meeting in Lalitpur on Sunday, Mahat warned that the party risks a poor performance in the upcoming elections if it fails to retain its traditional voter base rooted in its historical values, religion, culture, civilization and core ideology. “Our party is old, but people are growing disillusioned with traditional parties. New parties are emerging under new names,” Mahat said. “In this context, the erosion of our traditional support base is a serious concern that the party must address.”

Mahat added that the NC will face serious consequences if it fails to promote its values, particularly its religious and cultural identity. “We represent the people who follow Hinduism, Buddhism, Kirat and nature-worshipping traditions. This is the party’s position—right to the center,” he said. “Communists reject religion, but we are believers. This is our party’s foundation, and it must be preserved.”

Stating that efforts are being made to undermine Sanatan religion and cultural heritage, he said the party must keep this ideological foundation intact.

Mahat also added that internal conflicts and disputes among leaders on social media have weakened the party’s morale and eroded public trust.

He also criticized the distribution of the active membership-distribution process. “In the name of protecting traditional leadership, active membership was extended only to family members. This has undermined the contribution of genuine party workers,” he added.
