KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML have reached a power-sharing deal for the formation of a new government in Bagmati Province.

As per the agreement, the two parties have agreed to lead the government on a rotational basis for a period of 20 months each. Bahadur Singh Lama, the parliamentary party leader of the NC, will lead the government first. He will then hand over the government leadership to UML’s parliamentary party leader Jagannath Thapaliya, who will lead the government until the election in 2027.

A meeting of leaders of the two parties finalized the power-sharing deal. Lama and Indra Bahadur Baniya of Nepali Congress, and former chief minister Dor Mani Paudel and parliamentary party leader Thapaliya from UML, among other leaders, participated in the meeting.

The two parties have also shared ministerial portfolios among themselves. As per the agreement, the NC will get Economic Affairs and Planning, Internal Affairs and Law, Social Affairs, Youth and Sports, Labor, Employment and Transport, and Culture, Tourism and Cooperatives ministries.

Likewise, UML will lead Physical Infrastructure, Water Supply, Energy and Irrigation, Agriculture and Livestock Development, Forest and Environment, Industry, Commerce, Land Management and Administration, and Health ministries.

Lama has already staked his claim to form the new government in the province.
