NC, UML joined hands to influence corruption probe: Maoist Center

KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Center) has concluded that two major political parties have joined forces to influence corruption probe and push the constitution backward.

A meeting of the office-bearers of the party, which was held on Tuesday morning after Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML forged an understanding on forming a new power equation, arrived at the conclusion, according to Maoist Center leader who attended the meeting.

“While we were in the process of taking action against those involved in major corruption cases, those who have enjoyed state power for a long time have once again joined hands to try to stop the process,” the leader said. He stated that the NC-UML agreement would push the constitution one step backward and protect the corrupt.

Maoist Center leader Devendra Paudel said Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal will not step down immediately as UML has not withdrawn its support extended to the Prime Minister. “The Prime Minister will face the parliament if UML withdraws its support. He is not in the mood of resigning,” Paduel added.

Maoist Center Spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota said that the agreement between NC and UML is against the constitution. “The kind of developments that have unexpectedly occurred are neither natural nor constitutional,” Sapkota said. “It doesn’t seem natural for the country’s first and second largest parties to come together.”

NC and UML leaders are claiming that the two parties struck a deal on Monday night. The two parties have agreed to lead government by turns, form governments in three provinces each and form a committee to recommend amendments to the constitution.
