NC Special General Convention begins today

KATHMANDU: The 2nd Special General Convention of the Nepali Congress (NC) kicks off in Kathmandu on Sunday.

Convened under the leadership of the party’s two General Secretaries, Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, the convention will be inaugurated at 1 pm at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu.

Before the inauguration, party leaders and cadres will take out a procession from places like Sundhara, Ratna Park, Shankardev Campus, Kamalpokhari, and Kupondole, and proceed to Bhrikuti Mandap.

According to the party statute, a special convention must be called within three months if 40% of general convention representatives submit a written demand at the party office. About 54% of general convention delegates registered a demand for a special convention at the party office in the second week of October. However, after the NC Central Working Committee ruled that there was no need for a special convention, the two general secretaries called the convention after the party’s Central Working Committee to uphold the party statute.

A stage accommodating 50 guests has been constructed in the open ground at Bhrikuti Mandap, while more than 6,000 chairs have been arranged in the open area in front of the stage. The area around the stage has been decorated with party flags, gates, banners, and other publicity materials.

The special general convention will be chaired by Sabuj Baniya, president of the Kathmandu District Committee of the party. According to the organizing committee, most of the convention delegates from across the country have already arrived.

Arrangements have also been made for meals and refreshments for delegates at the venue. The committee has arranged accommodation for over 3,600 delegates at different hotels in Kathmandu, while rooms have been kept on standby for another 200 delegates, according to Ramesh Dhamal, who chairs the Accommodation and Meals Committee.

A closed-door session of the special general convention will begin on Monday morning. The organizing committee has not shared details of policy documents to be discussed during the closed session.
