KATHMANDU: The main opposition, Nepali Congress (NC), has objected to the government’s decision to end the winter session of the federal parliament.
The Nepali Congress parliamentary party meeting held on Sunday expressed serious concern over the government’s recommendation to end the ongoing session despite having sufficient time for the budget session.
Briefing the media about the decisions taken by the meeting, NC Chief Whip Ramesh Lekhak said the government’s decision is undemocratic and against parliamentary values and norms.
“Opposition parties in parliament have been raising the issue of misappropriation of funds in cooperatives. Since a minister is also implicated in the cooperative fund misuse, we had been demanding the formation of a parliamentary inquiry committee for an impartial and independent probe,” he said. “But the government chose to end the parliamentary session abruptly.”
Lekhak added that the NC parliamentary party has decided to raise the demand for an independent, impartial, and credible investigation into all those involved in misusing depositors’ money parked in different cooperatives.
According to Lekhak, the meeting concluded that necessary laws related to the implementation of the constitution, federalism, and issues of public concern could not be enacted in this session as the government failed to provide sufficient time to parliament.
