NC leader Koirala discusses economic issues with business leaders

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala engaged in discussions with businessmen and financial experts in Kathmandu to collect their suggestions for addressing the country’s pressing economic issues.

During the program, Shekhar Golchha, president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), emphasized that the country’s entire economic system, including the private sector, banks, and businesses, is facing significant challenges. He expressed concern that the situation has become so dire that the government’s revenue cannot cover even its recurrent expenses.

Pashupati Murarka, a former president of FNCCI, expressed worry about the government and society’s perception of businesspeople and the private sector, stating that they are being treated as if making a profit is a crime.

Haribhakta Sharma, former president of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries, urged the Nepali Congress leaders to develop a clear economic policy and plan, rather than just including it in their election manifesto. He also suggested discontinuing the distribution of cash for social security, as the state cannot afford to distribute cash in a situation where only around 18,000 out of nearly 500,000 youths entering the job market are being employed.

Responding to the concerns raised by the business leaders, Dr Koirala said the Nepali Congress always favors the development and expansion of the private sector. He expressed commitment to raise the matter in parliament and draw the attention of the government toward finding solutions to their concerns.
