KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party held a meeting with stakeholders from the education sector on Tuesday to discuss the Bill to amend and consolidate laws related to the education sector and the recent agreement reached between the government and the Confederation of Nepalese Teachers (CNT).
NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka, General Secretary Gagan Thapa, Chief Whip Ramesh Lekhak, and lawmakers were present at the meeting. Similarly, representatives from the CNT, Private and Boarding Schools’ Organization Nepal (PABSON), Higher Secondary Schools’ Association Nepal (HISSAN), National Private and Boarding Schools’ Organization Nepal (N-PABSON), and Community School Management Committee Federation of Nepal participated in the discussions.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Whip Lekhak expressed NC’s commitment to revising the Bill, which the government has registered in parliament, based on suggestions received from the stakeholders.
The central working committee meeting of the party had earlier discussed the demands raised by teachers and decided to hold discussions with them on the Bill and other pertinent issues.
Teachers from across the country participated in a demonstration in Kathmandu last week to protest the Bill. The CNT subsequently signed a six-point agreement with the government and withdrew their protest. Relief quota teachers and Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers, however, are still continuing their protest, stating that their demands have not been addressed in the six-point agreement reached between the government and the CNT.
