KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) has formally approved the agreement reached between its President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli to form a new ruling alliance.
A meeting of the party’s Central Performance Committee held on Wednesday approved the agreement made on Monday night, said NC Spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat.
According to Mahat, the meeting also requested Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to pave the way for a new government by stepping down.
The two leaders of the two largest parties in the House of Representatives signed an agreement on Monday night to change the existing power equation, form a new government, and make amendments to the constitution, among other issues.
As per the agreement, UML Chairperson Oli will lead the government for the first one and a half years, while Deuba will lead the government for the remainder of the term until the election.
A meeting of the UML Secretariat on Tuesday approved the agreement and requested the Prime Minister to step down.
UML, which is a partner in the existing coalition, however, has neither withdrawn its support for Dahal nor recalled its ministers.
