KATHMANDU: In a move seen as the ruling coalition’s preparation to remove Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar, Nepali Congress (NC) has instructed its members of the House of Representatives not to leave the Kathmandu Valley until September 19.
NC Chief Whip sent the message to NC lawmakers in the lower house on Wednesday evening. UML earlier instructed its lawmakers to not leave Kathmandu Valley until September 19.
NC and CPN-UML have urged Deputy Speaker Rana Magar, who is from Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to step down. The two parties are preparing to bring a motion for her removal if she refuses to step down.
Deputy Speaker Rana Magar had written a letter to the US Embassy in Nepal some nine months ago requesting the US mission to expedite visa interviews for five individuals to attend the 67th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York. However, the five individuals were not granted permission to travel to the US. The letter, written in February 2023, was made public some months ago.
The two parties are urging the Deputy Speaker to step down stating that she has failed to maintain the dignity of her position.
