NC almost certain to split, Khadka briefs CWC

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) appears almost certain to split after party President Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed disagreement with the eight-point proposal put forward by proponents of the ongoing special general convention.

A Central Working Committee member told Himal Press that Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka gave this briefing during the party’s Central Working Committee meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

“A party split is now almost certain. The general secretaries did not withdraw their proposals to declare a prime ministerial candidate, for President Deuba to retire from active politics, and to form a high-level mechanism to steer the party until the regular general convention. The leadership has already agreed to fulfil their other demands,” Khadka said in the meeting, according to the Central Working Committee member.

Although Deuba agreed to other points, a leader close to him said he remained unwilling to accept these three proposals. Deuba has objected to the proposals advanced by the two general secretaries regarding the declaration of a prime ministerial candidate, his own retirement from politics, and the formation of a ‘high command’ mechanism.

The eight-point proposal put forward by the two general secretaries:

1. Jointly take ownership of the special general convention
2. Implement the proposals passed by the special general convention with necessary amendments
3. The party president won’t play an active role in the party and won’t sign candidate nomination papers during this period
4. Form a parliamentary board to select candidates for the upcoming elections
5. Contest the upcoming election united as one bloc
6. Contest the upcoming elections independently without forming alliances with any party
7. Go to the upcoming election by declaring prime ministerial candidate
8. Form a five-member mechanism to coordinate and implement all these tasks, comprising the acting president, the two general secretaries, and two additional leaders
