KATHMANDU: Nepali national women’s football team captain and goalkeeper Anjila Tumbapo Subba is set to play in a European league.

Greek top division side Nees Atromitou WFC has signed Anjila for the 2024/25 season which begins in the last week of September.

With this, Anjila has become only the second Nepali player to play in Europe. Striker Sabitra Bhandari aka Samba is the first Nepali footballer to try her luck in Europe. She spent a season with Israeli side Hapoel Raanana before joining French side En Avant Guingamp in February.

Anjila earlier spent two seasons with Indian Women’s League (IWL) side Sethu FC, and one season with Masha United which plays in Pakistan’s National Women’s Championship.

Nees Atromitou is among the 14 clubs that play in the Women’s Alpha Ethniki – the highest professional women’s football league in Greece. It is based in Peristeri in western Athens. It finished ninth in the 2023/24 season, winning nine, drawing six and losing 11 matches.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play in a European league for the first time. It’s every player’s dream to play in Europe. I’ve been working towards this for two years, and now it’s finally happening. I’m excited to play in the league,” Anjila told Nepali sports portal Kheladi.com.
