KATHMANDU: Members of the National Assembly have called on the government to hold the upcoming House of Representatives elections in a peaceful environment.
Speaking at a meeting of the upper house at Singha Durbar on Tuesday, they urged the government to make the election fair and free from manipulation, to allow political parties and candidates to campaign freely, and to ensure that voters can cast their ballots without fear.
National Assembly Member Ganga Kumari Belbase said voters should elect candidates who raise strong voices against disorder, corruption, and foreign interference. She also said the government formed after the election must curb anomalies and irregularities and work to end unemployment.
Similarly, another member, Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achham,i said there is no alternative to elections to protect democracy and the constitution. He called on the government to ensure a peaceful election environment.
Likewise, National Assembly member Kiran Babu Shrestha said elections must be held on time in a fair and fear-free environment to put the constitution back on the right track. He objected to attempts to mislead the public by blaming political parties.
Other National Assembly members also urged the government to strengthen security arrangements for the elections scheduled for March 5.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Committee on Legislation Management, Tualsa Kumari Dahal, presented the committee’s report on the Film Bill, 2024, in the meeting. Likewise, Chairperson of the Federalism Enablement and National Concerns, Sonam Geljen Sherpa, also presented the committee’s annual report.
