KATHMANDU: The Federal Parliament Secretariat is holding an election for the National Assembly chairperson on March 12.

National Assembly Vice Chairman Urmila Aryal announced in the upper house meeting on Sunday that the National Assembly chairperson would be elected on Tuesday. Aryal instructed Padma Prasad Pandey, the general secretary of the Federal Parliament Secretariat, to publish election programs.

Earlier, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, the parliamentary party leader of the Nepali Congress in the upper house, had proposed to postpone the election by a few days. However, NC’s proposal was rejected by the upper house.

The post has been lying vacant since Ganesh Prasad Timilsina completed his six-year term in the upper house on March 3.

The CPN (Maoist Center) is the largest party in the upper house with 17 members. Nepali Congress has 16, CPN-UML has 10, CPN (Unified Socialist) has eight members, Janata Samajbadi Party has three, while Loktantrik Samajbadi Party and Rastriya Janamorcha Nepal have one member each.

One seat in the upper house, to be appointed by the President based on the recommendation of the council of ministers, is lying vacant.
