Namibia defeats the Netherlands by 24 runs in WCL-2

KATHMANDU: Namibia won its third match of the ICC World Cricket League 2, defeating the Netherlands by 24 runs at the TU International Cricket Ground on Friday.

Invited to bat first after losing the toss, Namibia scored 203 runs losing all wickets in 41.3 overs. The Netherlands, which was on course for a victory until the 41st over, witnessed a collapse of its lower order, losing its last four wickets in just 22 runs, and last three wickets for just nine runs.

Although Namibia lost opener Nikolas Davin in the very first over for a duck, it added 32 runs for the second wicket. Opener Malan Kruger scored 39 off 48 balls, while Michael van Lingen scored 10 off 21. Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton scored 49 runs, while Jan Frylinck hit 34 runs off 57 balls to take Namibia past 200 runs. Gerhard Erasmus and Zane Green scored 12 and 22 runs respectively, while Ruben Trumplemann remained not out at 23 off 26 balls.

Vivian Kingma took three wickets for the Netherlands, while Aryan Dutt and Roelof van der Merwe claimed two each, and Shariz Ahmad and Bas de Leede had a wicket each to their names.

Chasing 204 to record its second win in the series, the Netherlands lost opener Michael Levitt for a duck. However, Max O’Dowd scored 41 from 64 balls, and Bas de Leede hit 24 off 44 balls to keep the Netherlands in the chase. Noah Croes scored an unbeaten 46 off 56 balls but didn’t get support from the other end. Sybrand Engelbrecht scored 10, Captain Scott Edwards fell for four, and Shariz Ahmed scored 19 runs. Other Dutch batters failed to reach double digits.

Jan Frylinck and Gerhard Erasmus took three wickets each for Namibia, while Bernard Scholtz claimed two, and Ruben Trumplemann and Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton had a wicket each to their names.

Namibia’s Frylinck was selected as the player of the match for his all-round performance of 46 runs and three wickets.

The victory means Namibia will remain at the top of the league table with six points regardless of the result of the match between Nepal and the Netherlands. The two sides play their final league match on Sunday.
