Musk offers to buy OpenAI, Altman says ‘No Thank You’

KATHMANDU: Elon Musk has launched a $97.4 billion takeover bid for OpenAI, the company he helped establish in 2015.

According to media reports, Musk, alongside a consortium of investors, aims to redirect OpenAI toward its original mission of developing artificial intelligence with enhanced safety protocols and transparency.

The bid is particularly significant given Musk’s history with OpenAI. As a co-founder, he played a crucial role in establishing the organization’s initial nonprofit status and its commitment to developing beneficial AI. However, his departure in 2019 following disagreements with CEO Sam Altman marked a turning point in the company’s direction, especially as OpenAI shifted toward a more commercial model with products like ChatGPT.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, however, has rejected the offer. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Altman countered with his own provocative proposal, offering to purchase Twitter for $9.74 billion if Musk is interested.
