Minister Gupta tenders resignation

KATHMANDU: Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration, Rajkumar Gupta, who was implicated in a bribery scandal, has resigned from his post.

Gupta submitted his resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday morning.

Announcing his decision on social media, Gupta stated that he was stepping down from the Cabinet following allegations linking him to a bribery deal.

“Everyone is aware that my name has been repeatedly associated with a bribery deal for the past few days. Sometimes, even when one has done nothing wrong, one becomes a victim—and that is exactly what has happened to me,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “I have resigned from my position as Minister for General Administration so that investigations can proceed without hindrance and the truth can come to light.”

In a leaked audio recording, middlemen can be heard offering a bribe to an individual, allegedly Gupta, for the transfer of a government official obstructing some land transactions in Pokhara and the appointment of an individual to the Land Reform Commission. Gupta has maintained that technology had been misused to frame him.

“I hope no one else has to suffer as a result of the misuse of technology, as I have. I sincerely thank everyone who has supported me in various ways up to this point. With a renewed sense of responsibility towards the nation and the people, I pledge to continue fulfilling the party’s responsibilities with honesty and dedication, and to return to the people’s doorstep once again,” he wrote.
