Meet the new lawmakers of Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has published the final results in all 10 constituencies of Kathmandu.

Candidates of the Nepali Congress (NC) were victorious in five constituencies, while the newly-formed Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) took four seats. CPN-UML, which won six Kathmandu constituencies in 2017, has been limited to just one seat. NC was victorious in Kathmandu-1, 3, 4, 5 and 10, while RSP took Kathmandu – 2, 6, 7 and 8. Likewise, UML was victorious in Kathmandu-9

Kathmandu-1: Prakash Man Singh (NC)
Prakash Man Singh of Nepali Congress was elected to the House of Representatives from Kathmandu-1 getting 7,143 votes. His closest contestant – Rabindra Mishra of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) – received 7,018 votes. Singh was the common candidate of the five-party ruling coalition. These two had contested in 2017 as well. Singh has won all elections in Kathmandu-1 since 2008.

Kathmandu-2: Sobita Gautam (RSP)
Sobita Gautam of RSP defeated Maniram Phuyal of UML in the Kathmandu-2 constituency. While Gautam received 15,229 votes, Phuyal polled 11,555. Onsari Gharti, the common candidate of the five-party ruling coalition, finished fourth receiving 9,449 votes. CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal was elected from Kathmandu-2 in 2017.

Kathmandu-3: Santosh Chalise (NC)
Santosh Chalise defeated UML’s Krishna Rai by over 4,000 votes in Kathmandu-3. Chalise, the former mayor of Gokarneshwar Municipality, received 15,158 votes, while Rai polled 11,196 votes. Rai was elected from the constituency in 2017, defeating NC’s Ambika Basnet.

Kathmandu-4: Gagan Thapa (NC)
In the repeat of 2017’s contest, Gagan Kumar Thapa of NC was elected from Kathmandu-4, defeating UML’s Dr Rajan Bhattarai. Thapa received 21,558 votes, while Bhattarai got 13,855 votes. In 2017, Thapa had defeated Bhattarai by around 3,000 votes. This is Thapa’s third straight victory in Kathmandu-4.

Kathmandu-5: Pradeep Poudel (NC)
NC’s young leader Pradeep Poudel defeated UML’s senior vice chairman Ishwar Pokharel in Kathmandu-5. Poudel received 15,237 votes, while Pokharel polled 10,175 votes. This is Poudel’s first election in Kathmandu. He had been contesting from Tanahun previously. Pokharel was elected from Kathmandu-5 in 2017, defeating NC’s Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat.

Kathmandu-6: Shishir Khanal (RSP)
Shishir Khanal of RSP has been elected from the Kathmandu-6 constituency. He defeated CPN-UML’s Sarebndra Khanal. While Shishir received 14,204 votes, Sarbendra, who is also the former inspector general of Nepal Police, got 8,805 votes. NC’s Bhimsen Das Pradhan came third receiving 8,805 votes. Pradhan had won the 2017 election defeating Maoist Center’s Jhakku Prasad Subedi.

Kathmandu-7: Ganesh Parajuli (RSP)
Ganesh Parajuli of RSP was victorious in Kathmandu-7 defeating Shyam Kumar Ghimire of CPN-UML. While Parajuli received 8,743 votes, Ghimire polled 6,800 votes. Maoist Center’s Manushi Yami, the common candidate of the ruling coalition, got 6,063 votes. Ram Bir Manandhar of UML was elected from Kathmandu-7 in 2017, defeating Bikram Bahadur Thapa of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).

Kathmandu-8: Birajbhakta Shrestha (NC)
Biraj Bhakta Shrestha of RSP defeted Hamro Nepali Party’s Suman Sayami to win in Kathmandu-8. Shrestha received 10,105 votes, whereas Sayami received 5,889 votes. Jeevan Ram Shrestha of Unified Socialist – the common candidate of the ruling coalition – received only 4,877 votes. Unified Socialist’s Jeevan Ram Shrestha had defeated NC’s Nabindra Raj Joshi in 2017.

Kathmandu-9: Krishna Gopal Shrestha (NC)
Krishna Gopal Shrestha of CPN-UML has been reelected from Kathmandu-9 receiving 11,956 votes. His closest candidate Tek Bahadur Pokharel of RSP got 10,961 votes. Maoist Center’s Kalpana Dhamala, who was the common candidate of the five-party ruling coalition, received 6,402 votes. UML’s Shrestha had defeated NC’s Dhyan Govinda Ranjit in 2017.

Kathmandu-10: Rajendra KC (NC)
Rajendra Kumar KC of NC has been reelected from the Kathmandu-10 constituency receiving 14,448 votes. He defeated UML’s Himesh KC who got 11,786 votes. KC had defeated Maoist Center’s Hit Man Shakya in 2017.
