KATHMANDU:
The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has temporarily halted the implementation of the Mobile Devices Management System (MDMS).
In a notice issued on Friday, the telecommunications regulator stated that the implementation has been stopped until further notice, per the direction of higher authorities.
According to sources, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal directed Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel on Thursday to postpone the implementation of a decision to impose customs duty on mobile phones imported from foreign countries at the individual level.
The Department of Customs (DoC) was scheduled to enforce a provision starting Friday that would levy an 18% duty on mobile phones brought into the country by individuals from foreign countries. Under this new provision, individuals would be allowed to bring one phone into the country without paying any customs duty, but would have to pay an 18% duty on the second phone.
Currently, Nepalis returning from foreign countries are allowed to bring up to two mobile phones into the country without paying any duty.
