KATHMANDU: A mass cremation was held on Sunday for the 55 people, including Deputy Mayor of Nalgad Municipality, Sarita Singh, who lost their lives in the Jajarkot earthquake.

Fifty-five individuals from Nalgad Municipality in Jajarkot lost their lives in the magnitude 6.4 earthquake that struck at 11:47 pm on Friday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Purna Bahadur Khadka, and Karnali Province Chief Minister, Raj Kumar Sharma, along with other officials, attended the mass cremation.

“The government managed to complete search and rescue operations within a day, utilizing all state agencies,” Khadka stated. “Relief distribution began on Sunday itself. We will ensure that all earthquake survivors will receive relief materials within two days.”

Khadka also announced that the government would initiate reconstruction efforts immediately.

The earthquake has claimed 105 lives in Jajarkot and 38 in Rukum West. Furthermore, 166 individuals in these two districts have sustained injuries.
