KATHMANDU: National Martyr’s Day is being celebrated across the country on Wednesday.
In his message, President Ram Chandra Paudel paid tribute to known and unknown martyrs. Sacrificing one’s precious life for the welfare of the people and the nation is true martyrdom. On this occasion, I hope that this day inspires and encourages all political parties, the general public, and all concerned to dedicate themselves in thought, word, and deed to fulfilling the aspirations of the martyrs who laid down their lives for the sovereignty of Nepal and its people,” he said.
Likewise, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that the sacrifices of martyrs serve as an inspiration and provide the courage to work toward change.
Speaking at the main ceremony organized by the government, Oli highlighted the contribution of great martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the fight against the Rana regime and for democracy in different periods of history. Stating that Nepal achieved a federal democratic republic due to the sacrifices and inspiration of the martyrs, he reiterated that sovereign citizens are the ultimate source of power in this system. “There is a need to strengthen and sustain the democratic system. People’s representatives should work with that spirit,” he added.
Oli also said the era of suppressing peaceful movements by resorting to killings to defend autocratic rule has ended. “We have established democracy after a long struggle. Democracy does not mean anarchy; it is a progressive, civilized system with good governance,” he said. “If changes are needed in governance or leadership, they should be made through democratic processes.”
The event was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers, ministers, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Prime Minister’s chief advisors, the Chief Secretary of the government, the Chief of Army Staff, secretaries and other distinguished guests.
Earlier, Prime Minister Oli visited the Martyrs’ Memorial at Lainchaur and Shahid Gate to pay tribute to martyrs.
