LUMBINI: Police have arrested CPN (Maoist Center) Vice Chairperson and former Speaker for an investigation into gold smuggling.
Mahara was arrested in Kapilvastu and is being sent to Kathmandu, according to a source within the Nepal Police.
His son Rahul is already in judicial custody in the same case.
An investigation conducted by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police revealed that the father-son duo had direct contact with gold smuggler Daojing Wang.
Police initiated the investigation against the two after gold concealed in vape was smuggled into the country. During interrogation, Mahara informed the police that he had only inquired with the customs officials why the consignment of vape was impounded.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs, Rabi Lamichhane, instructed the police on Sunday to take action against everyone implicated by the high-level commission to study gold smuggling, led by former high court judge Dilli Raj Acharya.
