KATHMANDU: The main opposition, CPN (Maoist Centre), has rejected the ruling coalition’s proposal to resolve the ongoing parliamentary deadlock.
During a meeting held on Monday at the Office of the Prime Minister in Singha Durbar, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and leaders from the ruling coalition urged Maoist Center leaders to help restore the smooth functioning of parliament by ending the impasse.
However, Maoist Center leaders reiterated their demand that Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak must resign over the recent visit visa controversy.
Following the meeting, Maoist Center’s Chief Whip, Hitraj Pandey, said the meeting ended without a resolution. “Leaders of the ruling coalition proposed that we let parliament function as per the schedule. However, we remained firm in our position that the home minister should step down to pave the way for an independent investigation into irregularities related to visit visas,” he added.
Prime Minister’s advisor Agni Kharel, however, claimed that discussions with the opposition party had been positive and that parliament would resume normal functioning on Tuesday.
Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Maoist Center Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, among other leaders, were present in the meeting.
