KATHMANDU: All six individuals, including the pilot, on board the Manang Air helicopter that crashed in Lamjure Pass (3560m) of Likhu Pikey-5 of Solukhumbu district in eastern Nepal on Tuesday have been confirmed dead.
DSP Deepak Shrestha, the chief of the District Police Office, Solukhumbu, has officially confirmed the fatalities. He added that police personnel are currently recovering bodies from the crash site. “Rescue helicopters have been unable to land in Lamjure Pass due to inclement weather conditions,” Shrestha added.
The chopper was bringing five Mexican tourists, who were returning from a visit to the Everest region, to Kathmandu. Captain CB Gurung was flying the ill-fated chopper.
According to the police, the helicopter departed from Surke helipad, located below the Lukla airstrip, at approximately 10:05 am. Contact with the helicopter was lost shortly after takeoff.
