KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a man who had escaped from the Central Jail, Kathmandu, during the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9, on the charge of stealing Rs 1.6 million from a cooperative.
According to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, Dipak Gajurel (28), originally from Belkot Municipality-9 of Nuwakot, was arrested from Sorhakhuttee by a team from Metropolitan Police Circle, Gaushala, on Friday.
Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, the spokesperson for the District Police Range, Kathmandu, said Gajurel was arrested with Rs 1,023,500 in cash.
Approximately Rs 1.6 million had been stolen at around 12:45 am on Wednesday from the Rajshree Savings and Credit Cooperative Office in Sinamangal, Kathmandu-9. Based on information provided by the cooperative, the Metropolitan Police Range, Gaushala, arrested Gajurel on Friday.
Police say Gajurel already faced 22 cases, including cooperative theft, theft, narcotics offences, and indecent behaviour.
Along with the cash, police recovered silver-coloured anklets and a Canon camera from Gajurel.
