Make diplomatic efforts to ensure fair investigation into Lamsal’s death, lawmakers tell govt

KATHMANDU: Members of the House of Representatives have urged the government to take diplomatic initiatives for an investigation into the suspicious death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal in Odisha, India, and other incidents that followed.

Lamsal was found dead in the hostel of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) on Sunday evening. After Nepali students demanded justice for her, the university administration suspended over 500 Nepali students and ordered them to vacate the university premises immediately. The university later extended an apology and revoked the suspension.

Speaking during the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, they said Nepalis are repeatedly humiliated due to such incidents in a neighboring country.

CPN-UML lawmaker Chhabilal Bishwakarma said that the suspicious death of the Nepali student has affected Nepal, Nepali society and the student community. “It is necessary to conduct a factual investigation into this matter. We have received information that students there are under pressure,” he added.

Similarly, Madhav Sapkota of CPN (Maoist Center) expressed said Nepali students were subjected to humiliating behavior while demanding justice to a fellow Nepali. “Inhumane treatment was meted out to Lamsal instead of ensuring justice. This is an attack on Nepal and Nepalis as a whole,” Sapkota said. He added that Nepali students studying there continue to face humiliation and insecurity due to the government’s diplomatic incompetence.

Manish Jha of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) said that the self-respect and security of Nepali citizens in the neighboring country are not ensured. He called for a revision of Nepal’s diplomatic strategy.

Dhurva Bahadur Pradhan of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) said that Lamsal’s unnatural death has raised questions about why such incidents keep happening. “The behavior towards Nepalis after the incident has been inhumane,” he added.
