JANAKPURDHAM: Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (JSP) Chairman Mahantha Thakur has been elected to the House of Representatives from Mahottari-3 constituency.
Thakur defeated Hari Narayan Yadav of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP). Thakur – the common candidate of the five-party coalition – received 16,375 votes, while Yadav got 14,325 votes. Yadav was supported by CPN-UML in the election.
Likewise, independent candidate Ram Adhar Kapar received 733 votes.
Thakur was elected from Mahottari-3 in 2017 as the candidate of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal. He had received 26,845 votes in the election.
The octagenarian leader began his political career by joining Nepali Congress and won the 1991, 1994 and 1999 elections from the Sarlahi-5 constituency.
After the political change of 2006, he resigned from NC and formed Tarai Madhesh Loktantrik Party. The party was restructured into Rastriya Janata Party Nepal in 2017.
